As a teacher, the most challenging student to deal with is the obnoxious
one. This type of student is exceptionally annoying. Obnoxious students are
overenthusiastic and rowdy. They are loudspeakers and interrupt others; they
are attention seekers who want to be in the spotlight all the time. Such
students deplete the teacher's energy. Obnoxious students dominate the
conversation and take others' turn in-class conversations; they affect the
polite and shy students and do not allow them to talk. Although
such behavior affects the class, teachers cannot ban those students from
participating in the conversations or expressing their ideas even though they
speak nonsense most of the time. Teachers are role models; they cannot
discourage those students. All that they have to do is know how to deal with
them to avoid losing them. Teachers must make it clear from the beginning of
the year that all the students must have the opportunity to be heard. No one is
allowed to dominate the others.
Moreover, they must have a limited time to express their points to let their friends express theirs too. Student's answers must be brief, profound, and informative. Furthermore, if they want to talk about a topic that is not related to the lesson, they should talk about it at the end of the session if time permits. If it is an important issue, they can privately talk about it to not waste the class's time. Teachers can also divide students into small groups and put shy students together to get the chance to talk.
Teachers must make positive reinforcement; students seek attention, so a teacher should notice them. Encourage them and make them feel safe and that they are realized even if they do not talk; praise their good behaviors, teach them to share the stage during class discussion, and let them know when to speak.
